Why ours

History you can wear, and stand behind

Most history merch is a slogan on a cheap shirt. Ours starts with a true story, drawn as a plate and checked against its sources, then printed on things worth keeping.

The Letter T

Every era in the shop is in this one letter. Read it from the foot up.

  1. Deep time

It starts in the rock, with shells, fish and an ammonite in the swash of the letter.

  2. Before writing

Standing stones, and the people who raised them.

  3. Written history

    Walled towns climb the stem.

  4. Industry

Gears, chimneys and an iron bridge.

  5. Today

    A skyline at the crown.

Who killed Ötzi?

In 1991, two hikers found a body in the Alpine ice. It was more than five thousand years old, and in 2001 an X-ray showed how the man died.

Watch the film

No plate from this film yet. The Pass is the nearest in place: a crossing of the Alps, where Ötzi died, though its story is Hannibal's army in 218 BC.

The scroll that survived the fire

Legend says Caesar's fire destroyed the Library of Alexandria. We follow a representative scroll, one like those the flames spared, and the case that slow neglect did what the fire couldn't.

The dinosaur at the bottom of the sea

In 2011, a digger in a Canadian mine hit an armoured dinosaur in rock that had been seafloor. It was a land animal, and its last meal was still inside it.

Watch the film

No plate from this film yet. Deep Forest is the closest: a forest of ferns and conifers, the kind of plants in its last meal.

Gallery 05 · 1st century BC · Antikythera, Greece

The lump that was a computer

In 1900, sponge divers sheltering from a storm off a Greek island found a wreck full of statues. Beside them lay a lump of bronze with gears inside.

A thank-you card, and the story behind your plate

Every order comes with a printed card from us. Scan its code and you'll find the story card for the plate you chose: the plate on the front, the true story on the back, with our sources and what is still debated.

What arrives: your garment, a packing slip with our name on it, and the thank-you card. The story cards, one for each of the 20 plates, are online.

The thank-you card: “Thank you” from the Then & Theory team, the twenty plates in a strip, and a code that opens the story cards.

Sizing, printing, delivery, problems and payment. For anything else, see shipping and returns.

How do the sizes run?

Every garment has a size guide on its page, with chest width and body length for each size. Art prints come in 12 × 16 and 18 × 24 in, and stickers from 2 to 6 in.

How are the plates printed?

In full colour, after you order: straight onto the garment, on heavy matte paper for art prints, and on vinyl for stickers. Nothing sits in a warehouse.

Do art prints come framed?

No. They ship rolled and unframed, so you can frame them your way. The second photograph on each print's page shows both sizes to scale.

When will it arrive?

Checkout shows the shipping options and delivery estimate for your address before you pay.

What if something's wrong with my order?

Who handles payment?

Checkout runs on Fourthwall, our store and fulfilment partner. We never see your card details.
